Steps
Ask one clear question with sources
Write the question the brief must answer, who reads it and what decision it supports. Ask the search assistant to answer with a source for every claim and paste the answer into a document.
WeakTell me about packaging rules.
BetterWhat are the current labelling rules for selling handmade candles online in [country]? Give every claim with its source and say how recent each source is.
Pick the three claims that matter most
Mark the three claims your decision depends on. These are the ones you check; the rest stay in the brief as background, marked as not checked.
Open the sources and check each claim
Open each source yourself. Does it say what the answer says, is it recent, is it the original or a copy? Where a claim does not hold, find a better source or drop it. For checking a single number, see /guides/check-a-number-before-you-publish/.
ExampleClaim 2: source is a news article that quotes the regulator. Opened the regulator's page: same rule, updated this year. Checked.
Turn the checked notes into one page
Ask for a one-pager: the question, a short answer, the three checked claims with sources, open questions and what is not checked. Build it as a single page and share the link.
The full instruction
Copy it into any AI chat assistant and change only the first line.
Change only this line: QUESTION = [Should I start selling my candles in Germany?] You help me write a one-page brief with sources that answers my QUESTION. First ask me who reads it and what they decide. Then I paste my notes with sources from my search, and the three claims I checked myself, with the source I opened. Write the brief: 1. My QUESTION and a short answer in at most 60 words. 2. The three checked claims, each with its source. 3. Background points from my notes, marked [NOT CHECKED?]. 4. Open questions. 5. One line saying this brief is not legal or financial advice; for those points, check with a professional. Use only my notes. Do not add sources I did not give. Start with the short answer. Paste your material below this line:
What you end up with
A one-page brief that answers one question, with the three claims that matter checked against their sources and the rest clearly marked.
Common mistakes
- Trusting a source link without opening it.
- Checking easy claims and skipping the one the decision depends on.
- Hiding which points are checked and which are not.
Processes that need more than one tool
Each process below uses several tools, each for the job it does best. Any AI chat assistant works where one is named.
Ask with sources
Tools, in order: a search assistant → a shared document
- Ask the search assistant your one question and ask for a source for every claim.
- Paste the answer with its links into a shared document and mark the date.
The prompt for this process
Answer this question for a small business owner: [your question]. Context: [country, type of business, what decision this supports] Give every claim with its source link and the date of that source. Prefer official bodies and original sources over articles that quote them. Mark any claim where the sources disagree. At the end, list the three claims a decision would most depend on. Start with a short answer of at most 50 words.
Check the top three claims
Tools, in order: a web search → any AI chat assistant
- Open each of the three sources with a web search and find the original where an article only quotes it.
- Paste what each source really says into the chat assistant and ask whether the claim holds.
The prompt for this process
I am checking three claims against the sources I opened myself. For each claim: [paste the claim, the source link and the exact text from the source] For each one, say: does the source text support the claim fully, partly or not at all, is the source the original or a copy, and is it recent enough for [my decision]. Do not use any knowledge beyond the text I pasted. Start with claim 1.
Turn it into a one-pager
Tools, in order: any AI chat assistant → Gamma
- Ask the chat assistant to arrange the checked notes into a one-page outline.
- Paste the outline into Gamma, choose a single-page layout and share the link.
The prompt for this process
Arrange my checked notes into an outline for a one-page brief that I will build in Gamma. Question: [paste] Short answer: [paste] Checked claims with sources: [paste] Background points: [paste] Make five blocks: question, short answer, three checked claims with sources, background marked [NOT CHECKED?], open questions. Keep it to one page, at most 250 words. Add a last line that says where to check with a professional. Start with the question block.

Gamma is an AI tool that builds slide decks, one-page documents and simple web pages from an outline. In this guide it is used in “Turn it into a one-pager”. People use it for proposals, lesson slides and reports, and it stands out because the result is shared as a link that reads well on a phone.

We recommend a specialised tool for each process rather than one tool that does everything. Tools that try to do everything rarely do any one job really well, because no single function gets perfected. It is the same in life, in business and in relationships: spread your attention over ten places and nothing gets done properly.
