Ema designs invitations that spell correctly

01 — Every tool spelled it wrong

The winter charity evening needed invitations with Ema’s own sentence on them, in tall silver letters. Every image tool she tried agreed to the silver and failed at the letters: Winter Evenig. Charity Evenning. One produced a word that was not in any language. Nova offered to proofread. Nova cannot read, but her confidence was noted.

02 — Then one didn’t

Then one tool did not fail. Silver card, one sentence in tall letters, a drawn stray dog in the corner where a crest would normally go, and every letter where Ema had put it. She checked it letter by letter, then again, because the previous evening had taught her what confidence is worth.

03 — The old printer

The old printer near the river looked at the proof through a magnifying glass for a long time and then tapped it once, with a fingernail. A comma where a full stop should have been. Ema closed her eyes. The machine spells, it turned out. It does not punctuate like a lady. The printer fixed it with a pencil and did not charge for the lesson.

04 — Two hundred envelopes

Two hundred invitations came back from the printer with every letter in place and a stray dog in each corner, and Ema addressed them by hand over two evenings, because some things should still take an evening. Nova lay on the finished pile and refused to release the last six. They were posted a day late. Nobody noticed. Everybody came.
