Thomas designs posters for Adoption Day

01 — Eleven people

Adoption Day at Sanatorija brings eleven visitors every year, several of them Thomas’s cousins, who already have dogs. Twenty-three animals waited behind the fence and watched the gate, which is what they do on all the other days too. Thomas watched it with them and decided that this year the problem was not the gate.

02 — No stock puppies

The poster template arrived with a stock puppy and a sentence — your new best friend is waiting — that Thomas has heard too many times at the fence. He deleted the puppy and the sentence. Real photo, real name, one honest line each. Twenty-three posters took an evening, mostly because the honest lines are hard.

03 — Nine years. Snores

Nine years old. Snores. Fastest in the house. Hates brooms, loves everything else. Thomas put the posters up along the river on Thursday and a woman stopped at the first one, read it, laughed out loud, and photographed it. He did not know yet whether that was good. On Saturday he found out.

04 — Forty-six

Forty-six visitors came, and the cousins could not find parking. The coffee ran out at eleven and nobody minded. Eight animals went home that day, each with a poster in the bag so the new family would remember the honest line. The old dog snored in the car before they had left the yard. It said so on the poster.
