Sandra builds a website — and reads the renewal price

01 — Nina behind the bakery

Nina repairs faux-leather jackets in a corner behind a bakery, and people find her, as she puts it, by smell — fresh bread first, then the sewing machine. She has no website. She asked Sandra for one page, nothing more. Sandra said one page is where everything starts.

02 — The offer looked cheap

The offer looked cheap: one big number per month in large type. Sandra read the line after the number, because she always reads the line after the number. The second number — the price after the first term — was three times the first. Nina had not seen it. Most people do not. That is what the large type is for.

03 — The sticky note

Sandra wrote both numbers on a yellow sticky note — now, an arrow, after — and stuck it to Nina’s sewing machine before anything was signed. Nina read it, did the sum, and shrugged. “Still cheaper than a new jacket,” she said, which was true, and is the kind of thing Nina says to customers too.

04 — One page

One page: a photograph of Nina’s hands on a jacket, one line about what she fixes, a phone number, the opening hours. No “journey”. The baker next door was the first visitor, from his phone, through the wall. He needed a zip. The sticky note stayed on the machine, for the renewal month.
