Adam rescues a blurry fox — and reads the contest rules

Adam's best fox photo was slightly blurred. AI could fix it — but first he read the contest rules.

01 — Slightly blurred

The best fox of the year was slightly blurred, and Adam knew exactly why: he had held his breath and the fox had not. The machine could fix that in a minute. Before he let it, he picked up the printed rules of the contest and read them the way he reads a map — all of it, including the small print at the edge.

02 — What the rules allow

Sharpening was allowed. Noise reduction was allowed. Adding, removing or replacing anything in the frame was not, and every edit had to be declared on the entry form. Adam underlined the last line twice. “Fair,” he told the Queen. “She keeps her own tail. And I keep my own breath.”

03 — Sharper, not different

The fox came back sharp — every hair on the ear, the frost on the grass behind her, the small wet nose. Nothing added. The machine offered, politely, a prettier sky. Adam declined, politely. On the entry form he wrote: sharpening and noise reduction only. He signed it the way he signs everything, as if someone would check. Someone did.

04 — Second place

Second place. First went to a heron that nobody had touched at all, which Adam considered fair twice in one week — a record. The judges added one line under his name: thank you for declaring the edits. He pinned the fox above the Queen’s chair, next to the backwards “good morning”. The fox, as foxes do, did not care at all.

What should Adam try tomorrow?
