Sofia has twenty great-grandchildren. The AI remembers them

01 — About twenty

Sofia has about twenty great-grandchildren. She counted them once on her fingers at the kitchen table, lost count at fourteen and started again. “Maybe twenty-one,” she said. “Nobody tells me anything.”

02 — Lina. Lukas. Luna

When Luna walked in with her tablet, Sofia opened her arms and said, with great love, “Lina! No — Lukas? … Luna. Luna! I knew it.” Luna, who is nine and has heard all three, pushed her glasses up and sighed.

03 — Tell it once

“Tell the AI once,” said Luna, “and it remembers for you.” Together they made a family list in a general AI assistant on Sofia’s phone: first names only, birthdays, and one line about what each child likes. Sofia typed with one finger. It took the whole afternoon and two cups of tea.

04 — Three pies

Now the phone reminds her every morning. Three birthdays this week, so three pies. Last spring she baked a pie for a birthday that had already happened; this year she is early, which she mentions to everyone.

05 — There is no Lukas

When Sofia asked what to buy Lukas for his birthday, the assistant answered politely that there is no Lukas on the list — there is Luna, who likes templates and sighing. Luna has asked for this to be written down.

06 — The young ones come to her

Then something surprising happened. The teenagers of the family started coming to Sofia — to ask how to talk to an AI. She tells them what she tells the strawberry customers: be polite, be clear, and always check the answer.

07 — Needed and loved

“It is good to feel needed,” Sofia says, by the window, with Luna under her arm. “And loved. Even when I get the names wrong.”
