Sofia hires an announcer who never gets a sore throat

Sofia's voice was gone by 3 p.m. Her 9-year-old found her a voice that never gets tired — and read the licence.

01 — Fresh cranberries

“Fresh cranberries!” — forty times before noon, each one a little smaller than the last, until at three o’clock Sofia opened her mouth and nothing came out at all. Luna, nine, looked up from her phone. “I have a solution,” she said. “And a licence.” Sofia did not know what the second thing meant and was too hoarse to ask.

02 — A voice that never gets tired

Luna had typed the sentence the way Grandma says it, chosen a voice that sounded like a kind woman from the radio, and pressed play. “Fresh cranberries, picked this morning.” Two people stopped. Sofia pointed at the little speaker as if it had hatched. The box, Luna explained, does not get a sore throat, does not need tea, and does not shout at Max.

03 — Read it out loud

Before Sofia could sell a single berry with it, Luna read the licence out loud, standing between the cranberries and the scale, in the voice teachers use for rules. The free plan was for fun. Selling was not fun; selling was business. “So we pay for one month,” said Sofia, who had bought seedlings on credit before and knew how it felt, “like one box before ten.” She paid for one month. Ema, passing, bought jam.

04 — Gone by lunch

By lunch the boxes were gone — Luna counted them on her fingers — and Sofia had not said a word. She sat behind the stall with her tea and listened to a kind woman from the radio sell her cranberries, picked this morning, over and over, and found that she did not mind at all. Luna counted the coins too. Max, arriving late with a plan, was told to be quiet — the box was talking.

What should Sofia try tomorrow?
