01 — The school wants the fox to move

The teacher’s question was simple: could the fox in Adam’s photograph move, just a little, for the children? Adam knew it could. One photo, a minute of machine time, and the fox would breathe and turn her head. He said yes. Then, because he had been a hunter and hunters read the rules of a forest before entering it, he read the terms.

02 — What you may sell

The line was short and he read it twice. Free clips were for free things. His school talk was free, so the fox could move for the children. His photography course was not free, and he had been planning to open it with that very fox. “Not with you,” he told the printed fox. “Not until I pay for the right to.”

03 — The fox breathes

The fox turned her head — ears first, the way foxes do, then the eyes, straight into the lens that had caught her two winters ago. Adam had looked at that photograph a thousand times and never seen her move. The Queen leaned down from the top of the screen to look. He had not known a crow could be jealous.

04 — The right order

Thirty children watched the fox breathe and one of them asked whether she was real. “She was,” said Adam, “and the breathing is not. The rest is the forest.” The course opens next month, with a licence that says the word commercial, and the same fox. “I am not starting a business,” he told the Queen on the way home, “with a fox I am not allowed to sell.”

What should Adam try tomorrow?
