Adam reads the Crow Queen — in a language he does not speak

01 — A letter from Ireland

The letter was from a teacher in County Clare. Thirty children had read the Crow Queen in translation and wanted to hear the man who fed her read it himself — in English. Adam counted his English on his fingers and ran out at “good morning”. The Queen, on the back of the chair, offered nothing.

02 — Read it as you speak

So he read it the only way he could: in Lithuanian, slowly, to the crow. Eight minutes, one page turned too loudly, one caw at the part about the nut. He kept the caw. “That’s the recording,” he told the Queen. “Now the machine does the hard part.”

03 — My mouth, their words

An hour later he watched himself speak English with his own voice and someone else’s grammar. It was good. It was too good. Adam went back and made the very first frame say, in large letters, what had happened: Adam speaks Lithuanian; this English is translated with AI. “If I were a child,” he said to the Queen, “I would want to know that.”

04 — Thirty replies

Thirty replies came back a week later, every one of them in Lithuanian — translated the other way, and all of it terrible. One child had written “good morning, crow” with the letters in the wrong order. Adam printed that one and pinned it above the Queen’s chair. She looked at it the way she looks at everything: as if she had expected it.
