A gnawed birch in the middle of Vilnius, a crow with perfect timing and a beaver that borrows a tripod leg. A long nature story for adults and children.

01 — The gnawed birch
Adam knelt by the water and laughed. The trunk looked like a pencil run through a giant sharpener — wood chips everywhere, two clean tooth marks in the pale wood. “Well, neighbour,” he said quietly, “so this is where you live.” He poured tea from the thermos and sat down to wait, because beavers keep their own hours.

02 — The Queen ruins the shot
The beaver glided across the pond like a small submarine, a leafy branch in its teeth. Adam raised the camera a centimetre at a time. “CAW!” The tail hit the water like a gunshot, and the pond was empty. On the willow sat a crow, head tilted, unimpressed. Adam tore off a piece of his sandwich and left it on a stone. “Thanks,” he muttered. “Very helpful.”

03 — A deal with a crow
She was on the same branch the next morning, and the one after. Adam named her the Queen and paid her in nuts. After a month she came to his whistle; after two she took the nut from his palm, and the other crows at the ponds stopped shouting at him — she had told them, he was sure of it. “If you’re that good at telling stories,” he said, “maybe we should work together.” The Queen ate the nut and said nothing. The next time the beaver surfaced, she kept quiet.

04 — Click
This time Adam did not hurry. Beavers see poorly and smell everything, so he lay downwind in the wet grass and let the animal come to him. It climbed out, sat up, and turned a willow twig in its paws like corn on the cob. Click. Click. Click. That evening he pulled the detail out of the shadows, gave the story a voice and a minute of video, and posted it before midnight. By morning a mother had written: “My child made me read it three times.”

05 — The tripod leg
When he came back after dark, the tripod was standing on two legs and the camera hung like a drunk. A fresh drag mark led to the water. At the dam, between branches and mud, his grandfather’s oak leg stuck out — woven in as if it had always belonged there. “Well, you crook,” said Adam, and laughed so loudly the ducks took off. He left the leg where it was. Under the photo he wrote: my contribution to the city’s nature. It became the most-seen picture of his life.
The real Paupys beaver — filmed by Adam
This is the real beaver from the Paupys ponds in Vilnius, next to the Uzupis market — the one this story was born from. Adam filmed him in the reeds.
