Guide

Watch competitor prices every week without code

Ema, a Kailiniai hero

For this guide and its prompts we recommend:

  • Apify runs a ready-made scraper on your public competitor pages once a week and puts name, price and availability into one table. Free plan with $5 credit per month (source)
  • Shopify is where you change a price or an offer the same day you decide. 3-day free trial · €1/month for the first 3 months on most plans (source)

You can now track competitor prices without code.

A weekly table of public competitor prices that fills itself, a short list of real changes and one written price decision every week.

What you need

Sandra, a Kailiniai hero
  • Five to ten public product pages of your competitors
  • Apify for a weekly run, and a spreadsheet
  • Any AI chat assistant
  • Your own store, where you change a price or an offer
  • ApifyThe prices arrive in a table every weekFree plan
  • ShopifyOne considered price decision a weekTrial

Steps

  1. Choose five to ten public competitor pages

Pick product pages anyone can open without logging in, for products that really compete with yours. Before you add a page, read the site's terms and robots.txt: if they forbid automated collection, leave that page out and check it by hand.

    Weak

    Track all my competitors' prices.

    Better

Here are eight public product pages for handmade candles like mine. Tell me what to check in each site's terms and robots.txt before I collect name, price and availability once a week.

The prompt and the tool for this step

  2. Set up a ready-made scraper that runs once a week

Use a ready-made scraper from the Apify Store, paste your list of pages and choose only three fields: product name, price and availability. Schedule it once a week at a quiet hour, so it is gentle on the sites, and collect no personal data.

The prompt and the tool for this step

  3. Compare this week with last week

Export each run into the same spreadsheet, one tab per week. Paste the two latest tabs into a chat assistant and ask for every change larger than 5 percent, with the page link, so you can open and check each one.

    Example

Columns: competitor, product, page link, price last week, price this week, change in percent, availability, date checked.

The prompt and the tool for this step

  4. Make one decision a week

Write one decision with its reason: change a price, change an offer, or change nothing. Changing nothing is a valid decision. Keep the decisions in the same file, so after a month you can see what you did and why.

The full instruction

Copy it into any AI chat assistant and change only the first line.

Change only this line: BUSINESS = [a handmade soap shop selling bars online]

You help me watch competitor prices for my BUSINESS once a week from public pages only.

Below I paste my current prices, five to ten public competitor page links, and this week's and last week's tables (columns: name, price, availability, page link, date).

Do four things:
1. List every page where I should first check the site's terms and robots.txt, and remind me to drop any page that forbids automated collection.
2. Compare the two weeks and list every price change larger than 5 percent, with the page link and the old and new price. Use only the numbers I pasted.
3. Suggest three possible decisions for this week, one of them "change nothing", each with one line on the reason and the risk.
4. Do not guess prices that are missing; mark them as [MISSING?].

Start with the list of changes.

Paste your material below this line:

What you end up with

A weekly price table that fills itself from public pages, a short list of real changes you can check by link, and one written decision per week instead of an evening of copying prices by hand.

Common mistakes

  • Collecting pages that forbid automated access in their terms or robots.txt.
  • Running the scraper every hour instead of once a week.
  • Changing your price after one week of data without checking the page yourself.

Processes that need more than one tool

Thomas, a Kailiniai hero

Each process below uses several tools, each for the job it does best. Any AI chat assistant works where one is named.

  1. Choose five to ten public competitor pages

Tools, in order: any AI chat assistant → a spreadsheet

    1. Ask a chat assistant which competitor pages are worth watching and what to check in each site's terms and robots.txt.
    2. Keep five to ten public product pages in a spreadsheet, one row per page, with the date you checked the rules.

Recommended approach for this step: any AI chat assistant → a spreadsheet

Learning: you only watch pages you are allowed to collect

    The prompt for this process

I sell [what] to [whom]. I want to watch competitor prices once a week from public pages only.

    Candidate pages: [paste links]

For each page, tell me: whether it can be opened without logging in, which part of the site's terms and robots.txt I must read before collecting anything automatically, and what to do if collection is not allowed (leave it out and check it by hand). Do not guess what the terms say; tell me where to look. Then suggest which five to ten pages to keep and why.

    Start with the first page.

  2. Set up a ready-made scraper that runs once a week

Tools, in order: Apify → a spreadsheet

    1. Pick a ready-made scraper in the Apify Store and paste your list of public pages.
    2. Choose only three fields: product name, price and availability, and collect no personal data.
    3. Schedule one run a week at a quiet hour and send the result to your spreadsheet.

    Recommended for this step: Apify

Time: the prices arrive in a table every week without copying them by hand

    The prompt for this process

Help me set up a weekly Apify run that collects public prices.

Pages: [paste the five to ten links]
Fields I need: product name, price, availability
Where the result goes: [spreadsheet name]

Write: the exact list of fields with a short description each, a schedule of once a week at a quiet hour, a checklist of five things to confirm before the first run (public pages only, terms and robots.txt read, no personal data, one run a week, test on two pages first) and the column names for my spreadsheet.

Start with the list of fields.

  3. Compare this week with last week

Tools, in order: Apify → a spreadsheet → any AI chat assistant

    1. Export the latest Apify run into a new spreadsheet tab with the date.
    2. Paste this week's and last week's tabs into a chat assistant and ask for every change larger than 5 percent, with the link.
    3. Open each changed page yourself before you trust the number.

    Recommended for this step: Apify

Quality: you see real changes with links instead of a feeling

    The prompt for this process

Compare my two weekly price tables.

    Last week: [paste the table]
    This week: [paste the table]

List every product where the price changed by more than 5 percent: competitor, product, old price, new price, change in percent and the page link. Then list products that became unavailable or available again. Use only the numbers I pasted; if a price is missing, write [MISSING?]. Check your percentages once more before you answer.

    Start with the biggest change.

  4. Make one decision a week

Tools, in order: any AI chat assistant → Shopify

    1. Ask a chat assistant for three possible decisions, one of them to change nothing, each with its reason and risk.
    2. Write your decision in the spreadsheet, and if you change a price or an offer, do it in your Shopify store the same day.

    Recommended for this step: Shopify

Money: one considered price decision a week instead of guessing

    The prompt for this process

Help me make one price decision this week.

    My product and price: [paste]
The changes I checked by opening the pages: [paste the list]
My costs and my lowest acceptable price: [paste or say "unknown"]

Suggest three decisions: change the price, change the offer, or change nothing. For each give one line on the reason and one line on the risk. Do not suggest a price below my lowest acceptable price, and do not promise sales or income.

Start with the decision to change nothing.
