Guide
Test a print-on-demand product before you sell it
One product you have held in your hands and checked — instead of a shop full of designs you have never seen printed.
What you need
- One design idea that fits your existing audience
- A print-on-demand service that ships samples
- A five-point checklist (below)
Steps
Start with one product
One mug, one tote, one T-shirt — the one your customers would actually use. Variety comes later.
Make the design readable from two metres
Print previews flatter. Fewer words, bigger shapes, high contrast.
Order a sample to yourself
Sandra’s rule: never sell what you have not held. Check the print, the colour, the fabric, the packaging and the delivery time.
Write the listing from the sample
Describe what you saw and felt — material, size, how it washes — not what the mock-up promised.
WeakPremium luxury quality tote.
BetterHeavy cotton tote, big enough for a laptop; the print stayed sharp after two washes.
Decide with your own numbers
Price, delivery time and returns — write them down before you list. If one of them does not work, change the product, not the description.

You help me check a print-on-demand product before I sell it. The product: [e.g. cotton tote with my logo] What I saw when the sample arrived: [print quality, colour, size, packaging, delivery days] My audience: [who buys from me] 1) List anything in my notes that could disappoint a buyer. 2) Write an honest product description (max 80 words) using ONLY what I observed. 3) List 3 questions a buyer might ask that my description does not answer yet. No superlatives, no claims I did not make. Start with point 1.
What you end up with
A product you have tested yourself and a description that matches what arrives — fewer surprised customers and fewer returns.
Common mistakes
- Selling from the mock-up without ordering a sample.
- Describing the product with words from the generator instead of what you saw.
- Launching ten designs before one has worked.
